2012 Specialized Demo and Status

2012 Specialized Demo

For 2012, the top end Demo 8 gets a CCDB out back, but wheres the carbon?

2012 Specialized Demo Frame

Pretty sure Specialized is giving kids LSD and letting them pick their new colors.  This one looks like Ronald McDonalds spaceship, that or Sam Hill has really gone off the deep end and wanted a bike to match his TLD kits.

Also, it appears as though the legendary Big Hit is no more.  Now replaced with the new "Status".  You think people are taking social networking a little too seriously?

2012 GT Fury

While most companies are working on getting carbon versions of their DH bikes to market, GT has gone the other direction for 2012 and has introduced a alloy version of the Fury.  The bike features the exact same geometry as the carbon version ridden by Mick Hannah and will be priced right around $3100 complete.

Blown Rock Shox Vivid Air

Blown Vivid Air

While I have seen this many times with Fox DHX Air's and RP23's, I have never seen it with a Rock Shox air shock, let alone in person but on Saturday, opening day of Sunrise Park Resort here in AZ, this is what AZFR Mike-E got to deal with before he even hit the lift.  He pulled his Demo 8 out of his truck, sat on the bike and "pop", instant 100% sag.  Here's to hoping that Rock Shox takes care of it and it isn't a sign of a larger problem with the Vivid Air.

Fox Inverted DH Fork Prototype

Inverted Fox Proto

Over the weekend at the US Open, Fox decided it was time to give everybody something to talk about.  During one of the early morning practice runs, they strapped this prototype inverted fork to the front of Gee Atherton's bike and sent it down the hill, and other than giving everyone a little peek at speed, they refused to say anything else about it.

What has been unveiled, as well as a lot of speculation can be found over on PinkBike.com

You don't really see a lot of bikes from the old Soviet Union, but they actually have a pretty big scene and by the looks of it, some manufacturing, the biggest being "Forward Bikes" and this is their new "DH" model.  Although there isn't a ton of info about any of these bikes, you can read (In Russian) about the Forward DH over at twentysix.ru.

Brodie Gearbox DH

Brodie Gearbox DH Bike

Brodie Bikes has released picts of its prototype gearbox DH bike based around the SR Suntour V-Boxx and apparently will be testing it at Whistler this year.

From the Brodie Bikes blog:

We’re proud to announce we’re teaming up with Whistler Mountain Bike to test/demo/ride our prototype Downhill SR Suntour Internal Gear V-Boxx. The big green mean machine will be ridden by Chris of Whistler Mountain Bike throughout the Spring in the Whistler Bike Park.

Gearbox bikes were developed to eliminate common problems associated with a derailleur based system. Although adding a significant amount of weight, the mass is centralized in at the core of the bike and down low; thus giving it a very stable and balanced feel.

While I generally would probably recommend against having the ano stripped off your new $1600 Boxxer stanchions for the sake of aesthetics, I do salute those who have the cojones to just go for it.  Such is the case with the red custom anodized stanchions on this 2010 Boxxer WC which I have to say, looks pretty bling.

2012 KHS DH300

KHS DH300

KHS Bicycles has finally announced the availability and specs of their new KHS DH300.  The bike that Logan Binggeli was piloting last year will become available at the end of April with one exception, it will not be sold in the United States. (Thanks DW!).

Here is the official release, albeit translated from Italian so bare with it.

"After three years of gestation, a successful season for Logan Binggeli, a rising star in the world of gravity and cutting edge KHS Gravity Racing Team, which competed in 2010 with a prototype here is finally available the new 300 DH downhill which is called to replace the glorious DH 200. One Of These Things Is Just Like The Other

Diamond Back Massi Transition

The big hype all over the internet over the past week has been the DiamondBack DH prototype that propelled rider Kyle Thomas to victory in the 2011 Double Down Hoe Down a few weeks back. Everyone is comparing it to Transitions TR450, although the linkage is a completely different setup and actually a lot more similar to the now dead Soul Cycles DH proto bike. (See Below).  What is amazing is the comparison to Massi's new DH bike and the TR450.  Both Massi and Transition are manufactured by Astro Engineering in Taiwan and by the looks of it, Astro has sold out the TR450's design to the open market.  Is this a case of Transition not designing the bike in the first place, or even worse a case of Astro duplicating it and offering it up to other customers?  Either way, it's just another in the long list of sorted stories about making bikes in the orient.

The now dead Soul Cycles DH proto.
