Three trail oriented projects in the Flagstaff area were awarded funding under the Secure Rural Schools Act Title II by an appointed Resource Advisory Committee and the “Deciding Federal Official”, Coconino National Forest Supervisor, Earl Stewart.

  • The Arizona Trail Association was awarded $37,800 to maintain sections of the Arizona National Scenic Trail along Walnut Canyon Rim in order to address erosion issues on this popular non-motorized trail.
  • The Coconino National Forest Flagstaff Ranger District was awarded $68,250 to do a National Environmental Policy Act, (NEPA), analysis for recreation planning in the Mount Elden and Dry Lake Hills area. This study will be assessing the need and suitability of projects such as the realignment of several system trails, the addition of new trails, (including downhill specific mountain bike trails!), the development of a formal rock climbing area and other improvements for recreation in the Dry Lake Hills and Mount Elden Area. This planning could lead to some much needed improvements and additions to this nearby non-motorized trail system!
  • The Coconino National Forest Flagstaff Ranger District was also awarded $78,750 to do a National Environmental Policy Act, (NEPA), analysis for multiple-use motorized single track trail planning along the Highway 180 corridor north and west of Flagstaff. If implemented, this trail system could provide for some great mountain bike loops using the Arizona National Scenic Trail through Hart Prairie.

Flagstaff Biking Organization is looking forward to participating in the above planning processes in order to help assure maximum benefit to mountain bikers in the Flagstaff area. Stay tuned for details.
